A relaxed corner of Barbados’ West Coast

Holders Retreat is ideally positioned on Barbados’ West Coast, between The Cliff restaurant to the south and Sandy Lane to the north, with some of the island’s best-known beaches, restaurants and leisure destinations within easy reach.
Set among tropical gardens in Holders Hill, St James, the property offers a peaceful base in an exclusive area. Its quiet residential setting feels private and unhurried.
Spend the morning beside the Caribbean Sea, enjoy lunch overlooking the water, explore Holetown in the afternoon and return to the calm of Holders Retreat.

Getting around
Many local attractions are only a short walk from Holders Retreat, but a rental car is recommended for exploring the West Coast and the wider island at your own pace. Having a car makes it easier to discover villages, visit different beaches and reach the quieter corners of Barbados.
It also gives you the freedom to combine several stops in a day, from a morning by the sea to lunch inland. For guests who prefer not to drive, taxis are readily available for local journeys and trips further afield.

The Platinum Coast
Paynes Bay Beach is approximately a 15-minute walk from Holders Retreat. The return journey is uphill, so many guests prefer to travel back by car or taxi. For guests without a rental car, a complimentary shuttle service is available on request.
Nearby Sandy Lane Beach and Folkestone Marine Park, which includes a protected marine environment, offer even more opportunities for swimming, snorkelling or simply finding a shady spot beneath the palms. The calm waters along this side of the island are also ideal for paddleboarding, kayaking and other water sports.

Dining on the West Coast
The West Coast is home to some of Barbados’ most celebrated restaurants. Nearby, The Cliff pairs its dramatic setting overlooking the Caribbean with a reputation as one of the Caribbean’s leading dining destinations.
In Holetown, The Tides and Paul Owens at the Beach House offer waterfront dining in elegant settings. For something more relaxed, you’ll find informal restaurants, beach bars and local spots along the coast, perfect for fresh fish, a casual lunch or a sunset drink.
From special dinners to leisurely lunches, there is plenty to suit your mood.

Holetown
A short drive north brings you to Holetown, one of the West Coast’s main hubs, offering a lively mix of supermarkets, banks, cafés, restaurants and duty-free shopping.
At its heart is Limegrove Lifestyle Centre, home to luxury brands including Cartier, Breitling, Ralph Lauren and Michael Kors, alongside restaurants and bars arranged around landscaped open-air courtyards.
Whether stopping for essentials or spending an afternoon browsing, Holetown is an inviting place to shop, pause for coffee or enjoy an evening.

Polo, golf and island life
Holders Retreat is particularly well placed for two sporting traditions closely associated with this part of Barbados. Nearby Holders Polo Club is one of the island’s best-known polo venues. During the season, matches bring together local and visiting players in a relaxed Bajan setting, offering guests a chance to enjoy the atmosphere from the sidelines.
Just to the north is Sandy Lane’s celebrated Green Monkey golf course, set within a former limestone quarry and surrounded by tropical landscaping. Both golf and polo are part of the character of this corner of the island.

On the water
A catamaran cruise along the West Coast is one of the best ways to experience Barbados from the sea. Many cruises combine sailing with opportunities to swim with sea turtles and stop for snorkelling, giving you the chance to enjoy both the marine life and a different view of the coastline.
Between stops, there is time to relax on deck and take in the scenery. Private boat trips can also be arranged for guests wishing to explore further along the coast or enjoy a more personal outing on the water.

A taste of Barbados
On Sundays, nearby Holders Farmers Market brings together local food producers, craftspeople and artists within the grounds of historic Holders House. Browse fresh produce, homemade food, art and handmade pieces while meeting some of the people who live and create here. It is a lovely way to spend a leisurely morning and discover something made on the island.
Beyond the immediate area, Barbados offers everything from rum distilleries and historic houses to tropical gardens and dramatic Atlantic scenery, with plenty of reasons to venture out and explore during your stay.

A little history of Holders
Holders Hill takes its name from the historic Holders estate, centred on Holders House, a 17th-century plantation home associated with the Kidd family for more than half a century.
Wendy Kidd founded the acclaimed Holders Season in 1993. The annual arts festival attracted internationally known performers, including Luciano Pavarotti. The family also became familiar in British public life through Jodie Kidd, a successful model, television personality and racing driver.
This mix of history, polo, culture and family life has helped shape the distinctive character still felt around Holders Hill today.
